Hypnose en fysiologie

In 1949 schreef een psychiater van de universiteit van New York (Syracuse University, Syracuse, N.Y.) in het Psychiatric Quarterly (Volume 23, Number 3 / July, 1949) een overzicht van de wetenschappelijke basis, met name de fysiologie ervan. Bijzonder, dat anno 2008 hypnotherapie nog steeds tot een vorm van alternatieve geneeskunde gerekend wordt, of op zijn best, besproken wordt als onderdeel van de Geintegreerde Geneeskunde. De laatste jaren worden er steeds meer studies gepubliceerd met positieve resultaten, in tijdschriften die zich richten op Geintegreerde Geneeskunde, maar ook in vaktijdschriften voor bijvoorbeeld de gasteroenteroloog, de anesthesist en de pijnbestrijder.

In dit artikel geven we de bronnen weer die Bernard E. Gorton gebruikte.[1] Zijn artikel droeg de titel: ‘The physiology of hypnosis’, de fysiologie van de hypnose. In dit artikel al veel boeiende wetenschappelijke feiten. 

In dat stuk besprak de psychiater onder meer de fysiologie en de reflexactiviteit van de darmen tijdens hypnose, de spiertonus en het fenomeen van de pijnstilling, de psychosomatiek en hypnose en de invloed van hypnose op ademhaling, metabolisme, vasomotorische activiteit, circulatie en de hersenfuncties middels het EEG.

Als we de literatuurlijst van voor 1950 lezen, valt op hoe exact de titels aandoen. Hoe serieus de artsen en onderzoekers toen hypnotherapie namen. Inmiddels is er een enorme hoeveelheid literatuur ontstaan over de klinische waarde en over de veiligheid van de hypnotherapie. Hypnotherapie is net zoals acupunctuur een behandelmethode die eigenlijk in niets verschilt met de moderne andere vormen van behandelen. Inhoudelijk dus net zo wetenschappelijk gefundeerd als veel reguliere behandelingen. Tijd voor integratie dus!  

Klinische studies over hypnose rond 1950 

Naast deze lijst zijn er nog veel andere studies te noemen, die in die tijd al de wetenschappelijke basis van de hypnotherapie legde. Hypnose werd vanaf 1949 bijvoorbeeld al genoemd als zinvol in verband met bevallingen. [2] [3] In datzelfde jaar een artikel over de waarde van hypnose bij de tandarts. [4] In 1936 stond in Lancet een artikel van de hand van Loomis, over de invloed van hypnose op het EEG, op de hersenactiviteit. Het onderzoek naar de effecten van hypnose op het EEG werd in die tijd door meer onderzoekers bedreven. [5] [6] In  die tijd begon men al het verschil te zien tussen Mesmerisme en echte medische hypnose. [7] Maar het duidelijkst voor de kliniek was ook toen al de waarde van hypnose bij de bestrijding van pijn. [4] Hoewel uit dezelfde tijd een studie stamde naar de effecten van hypnose bij de ziekte van Parkinson!
